Shooting Script

Evaluation- what we learnt
These are the basis of what we hope to incorporate in our teaser trailer whereby we will shoot all these shots during our production process. This might change depending on the vibe it prevails to the audience as well as when we are in the editing process. Therefore, we will enable this doesn't happen by shooting a multiple amount of shots of a particular moment which will give us a variety of shots to pick thus tackling the 'trial and error' problem we had last year.

Production Schedule

Evaluation
This film production schedule has all essentials of when we want each task to be completed which will enable us to finish this Horror teaser trailer in time. This is important because it was a major problem in my group last year which had led us down massively. The reason why we gave lots of time for the editing process because this is a massive flaw in my previous Media project therefore I need to dedicate a lot of our production process by editing.

Slasher Genre Trailer Analysis Essay- code and conventions

How does the trailer of 'Friday the 13th' follow the code and conventions of the slasher genre?

The trailer starts off with an establishing shot of the Moon which the low key lighting makes this shot seem peculiar and ominous as this correlates nicely with the assumption made with the phrase "It must be a full moon"(which it is) so this establishing shot foreshadows what will happen. This is reinforced by the middle shot sign of "Welcome to Camp Crystal Lake" whereby the light is focused on the edge of the sign which could show that something is going to happen. The man with the yellow clothing who states "Hello, who is that" gives the camera automatic response to have shot reverse shot(the light is again focused on the sign-close-up and the camera movement is not stable thus foreshadowing a drastic change will occur). The camera is panned forward which stops when the camera is put in a medium shot of the man with the yellow clothing stating "Oh hi, what you doing outside this mess". The diegetic sound of the intertexuality of Alfred Hitchcock's "Birds"(chaotic sound of birds dims down but not the non-diegetic sound) dims down which could be said a possible sign for ready for attack. There is a great emphasis of the knife sound when the killer kills the man with yellow clothing(when he comes forward) thus helping create the killer's dominance and the hierarchy between the killer and everyone else.(link to the question at school NAIMA..)

The sixth collection of shots starts with a medium shot, which has a low key lighting, whereby a girl opens the shower curtain very drastically thus implying how she is feeling and she's desperate to find someone. The non-diegetic sound, which could be argued to be an increase of heartbeats, intensifies when the female is reassured. The diegetic sound(dialogue) of "Must be my imagination" from the girl whereby a knife is shown behind her which is an effective use of intertexuality of the film "Psycho" because the audience will automatically know what will happen thus making them more engaged in the trailer. Thus, the camera is tracked behind the female when she turns around and holds onto the curtain for safety whereby the non-diegetic sound intensifies furthers. There is an shot reverse shot of the weapon then the victim's notice of the weapon which the shot focuses on the female character screaming by zooming to her facial expression. The collection of shots end with a shot reverse shot of the weapon then the light making a noise which makes the audience feel scared and wonder what happened to the female character as well as who exactly the killer is.

The twelve collection of shots starts with a medium shot that is put on slow motion whereby it tracks around the female councillor(the one who had sexual intercourse with the male councillor at the start of the trailer) and zooms in to her face. The voice over of "Friday the 13th, you may only see it once but that will be enough" is played with the diegetic sound of screechy violins, and the non-diegetic sound of the female councillor screaming turns to non-diegetic when the focus is on the character's face, both intensifies which helps create a awe feeling. The transition is fade out and the title screen graphic of "Friday the 13" is enlarged with the same voice over repeated as well as the non-diegetic sounds played before which is effective because it helps create that feeling once again before the trailer finishes.

In conclusion, these three shots conform to the code and conventions of a typical slasher film as it helps create an awe feeling of who the killer is as we aren't told who this killer is but it is obvious from the first shot that it is known to some of the victims shown in the trailer. The camera movements have obviously been put on a handheld camera through the shaky movements thus this helps create a sense of urgence within the audience as they want to know who the killer is as well as making them actually be put in the killer's POV so they are more likely to be scared through

Case study of 3 shots- "Friday the 13th"

1 shot- 3 seconds to 16 seconds
  • Moon-darkness(low key lighting)-represents death, change
  • Establishing shot-"Welcome to Camp Crystal Lake"-light focused on the sigh(edge)-perhaps something is going to happen
  • No transitions
  • Person-yellow clothing, man- "Hello, who is that"-camera pans forward
  • Light is focused on the sigh- close-up and camera is shaking- foreshadows a drastic change will occur
  • Man- medium shot of the guy with yellow clothing- "Oh hi, what you doing outside this mess".
  • Yellow man comes forward- non-diegetic sound of the intertextuality of Alfred Hitchcock's "Birds" dims down- a possible sign for ready for attack? The killer stabs the man with yellow clothing
  • Great emphasis of the knife sound- helps create the killer's dominance and the hierarchy between the killer and everyone else
  • The text of '1' has a transition- two halves come together- illustrates the action done by the killer.

6th shot- 55 seconds to 69 seconds(1 minute and 9 seconds)
  • Medium shot- low key lighting- girl opens shower curtain- drastic movement, implies how she is feeling and she's desperate to find someone
  • When she is reassured- the non-diegetic sound intensifies

  • She turns around and closes the shower curtain- camera tracks her movement behind her
  • She holds onto shower curtain for safety- non-diegetic sound intensifies further
  • Shot reverse shot- shot of the weapon
  • Shot reverses to victim- character screams and the camera zooms to her facial expressions
  • Shot reverse shot- weapon then the light(making noise)

12th shot- 1:49-2:01(2:14 including title screen graphics)
  • Slow motion(speed), zooms and tracks around the councillor that had sex in the start of the trailer
  • Screaming of the councillor
  • Non-diegetic(screaming) to diegetic when the focus of the character's facial expression is zoomed in
  • Transition- fade out
  • Voice over- "Friday the 13th, you may only see it once but that will be enough"- during the scene, plays alongside with the diegetic and non-diegetic sounds
  • During the scene, the non-diegetic(screechy violins including the screaming converting to non-diegetic) sound and diegetic(screaming) intensifies.
  • The title screen graphic of "Friday the 13th" is enlarged
  • Voice over- "Friday the 13th" is played during these scenes.
Evaluation
This brief trailer analysis of shots of this trailer has helped me break-down and fully understand how the shots conform to the code and conventions of the slasher genre. It has also taught me to fully grasp the importance of shots in my Horror teaser trailer therefore I need to make sure all the shots shown in the teaser trailer has a clear importance as well conforming to the genre, the code and conventions, media theories and possibly subverting everything important in films.

Animatic

Evaluation- what we learnt
The first thing to note is the reason why this is a short animatic as opposed to a normal length thirty seconds animatic is because we wanted to foreshadow how fast-paced we want our trailer to be. As animatics are meant to portray the film, we wanted the animatic to portray the speed of our film, which we believe is the most important feature within our film.

Storyboard

Online PowerPoint version- in case the slide share format is unable to be seen

Evaluation- what we learnt
From doing this storyboard, it gave us the finalised overview of what our trailer will include as well as showing us what the main shots is needed to be done to prove the Horror worth of our teaser trailer. This storyboard taught us the importance of proving our creative skills in our teaser trailer therefore we hope to use our time effectively in order to produce a worthy, satisfying Horror teaser trailer.

Film teaser trailer questionnaire commentary

Film teaser trailer questionnaire with commentary

If you are unable to see the Film teaser trailer questionnaire with commentary, you may see it from this Mircosoft PowerPoint online format.

Evaluation- what we learnt
From making this questionnaire, we were able to understand what our target audience wants to see in our teaser trailer and it allowed us to know the diversity of different opinions as well as whether these opinions differed from what we wanted the audience to want in our teaser trailer. These answers were beneficial to us as it was the same answers that we hoped the audience to have. Despite this, this experience was very rewarding and beneficial.

Mindmap

Draft- mind map

Finalised and actual copy of mindmap

The mind map in writing is what we started off with at the start of the planning process but we had to limit what we wanted as we have to be realistic. It has all the ideas we hope to be incorporated in our teaser trailer but it is highly likely that not all of these initial ideas will be shown in our teaser trailer. Depending on if some ideas drags the narrative on then it's likely to be scrapped.
Evaluation- what we learnt
From doing this mind map, we learnt the importance of planning during this production process. We also learnt the significance of sharing each other's ideas and how it helped us construct our finalised mind map. So, we hope to have the same mentality of helping each other throughout the production process.

Production roles

Producer: charge of money (Vidhee Sunkur)
Director: all creative control (Naima Ahmed)
Director of photography:in charge of filming(Mingma Gurung)
Production Designer- any set facilities, location (Mingma Gurung, Vidhee Sunkur)
Casting Agent- audition for casts- Equal role between every single individual
Editor: edit the film, all shots are in set- (Naima Ahmed, Mingma Gurung)
Costume designer- in charge of costume- (Vidhee Sunkur)
Make up artist- in charge of make up- (Mingma Gurung)
Prop manager- in charge of props- (Vidhee Sunkur, Naima Ahmed)
Continuity- makes sure everything flows in the trailer( Vidhee Sunkur)
Storyboard artist- create a storyboard( Mingma Gurung)

These roles make change, depending on what every single individual in my group fits better in that role than the person who original had that role. The reason why we joint-role some of the production roles is those roles very time-consuming therefore time would be saved for us to do our evaluation, poster and magazine front cover if those roles were joint.

Film teaser trailer questionnaire

Film trailer questionnaire

If you are unable to see the Film teaser trailer questionnaire, you may see it from this Mircosoft Word online format.

Evaluation- what we learnt
From making this questionnaire, we learnt the importance of having any audience response as it would help us figure out what film idea we would like to have as well as what we would like to feature in our teaser trailer. This questionnaire will also help us not go overboard with our film ideas as this was a major disadvantage to us last year. So, this questionnaire is not only helpful for us as we want to know what the audience thinks but it will help us stay in track and not go overboard with creativity.

Analysis of 3 trailers- What I learnt

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Characters& their representation: The representation of the females in the trailer are juxtaposed with one another as one of the characters we can automatically tell that she is intelligent through her philosophical thoughts and her being the only one reading an book, more specifically an astronomy book. This clear attribute is what is shown in Cara J. Clover(1992)'s Final Girl which eventually led to her surviving whereas the other character died due to their reckless behaviour thus showing how society views teenagers and if they do something bad, they shouldn't deserve to be alive. Whereas, the representation of the other girl conforms to the stereotype and more specifically the teen stereotype whereby she wears provocative clothing which led to her death because she wasn't careful about what she was wearing and reflects on what men think if women don't conform to their duties thus causing a 'moral panic' as the audience don't want to get killed for something they have initiated through their reckless behaviour therefore this makes the audience, more specifically teens reflect on everything they wear or do. The representation of men in the trailer is a rather negative one as they are presented as weak and submissive, which is a female common attribute not a male, thus showing how females are gaining dominance(which reflects the wider society as women were gaining rights through events such as the sexual revolution whereby women were able to have abortion or choose to have full control of whether they want to be pregnant or not through contraceptive pills) and that the distinction between men and women are blurring.
Setting: The setting of this film is in an abandoned family house in Texas whereby the main characters end up meeting Leather face and his family which they take part in cannibal activity. The film is set in Texas
Narrative: The narrative of the 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' is about two siblings, alongside with their friends, visit their grandfather's grave in Texas and are attacked by a family of cannibalistic psychopaths.
Theories linked to the trailers we have watched: Cara J Clover's Final Girl- the only character that manages to survive is one of the girls thus subverting to the stereotypes of women as well as representing the context at the time where women were having greater rights through the sexual revolution.
Types of shots used(what is common in the trailer, purpose of the shot):  Long shots were consistently used in the trailer in order for the audience to see everything that is going on the scene. There was also numerous amount of middle shots and POV shots to help the audience know what the character is feeling in that particular moment of the trailer as well as not giving us too much information of what exactly has terrified the character. These shots make the audience want to know what more is happening in the movie that isn't mentioned in the trailer through showing the audience a limited amount of shots of the cannibalistic nature of the family and also makes us wonder if any of the characters do escape.

I spit on your grave
Characters& their representation: In the start of the trailer, women are represented as sexually active and vulnerable through the eager nature of the men in the town wanting to pursue and treating Jennifer Hills as a 'sexual object' whereby their dominance is presented by the gang rape they inflicted on Jennifer Hills. But, this stereotype of women being vulnerable and weak is subverted through the killings Jennifer Hills inflicts on all the men that were part of the gang rape(it could be argued she conforms the stereotype as well as she has to be sexually active in order for her to initiate  her killings therefore showing women can only do what they want if they are sexual).
Setting: The setting of the film is set in a suburban and quiet town where everyone knows each other thus showing the significance of the action caused by the men as no one in the town except from them and Jennifer Hills know what has happened. Therefore, the gang rape took place deep into the woods whereby no one in the town will ever know what has happened thus showing the crimes one could make in order to preserve their credibility and reputation. Thus, this shows men are capable of doing anything as well as having the ability of preserving their reputation alongside the way.
Narrative: This film is about a women who joins a new town whereby all the men in the town love her. The friendliness and stability she had between them is disrupted when a gang of men rape her whereby she seeks revenge to every single individual that was part of the gang rape.
Theories linked to the trailers we have watched: Laura Mulvey's Male Gaze- Jennifer Hills is presented sexually throughout the film thus showing what the male audience generally tend to want to see in films.
Cultivation theory- this film makes people think that the crimes and infliction that are caused by women are in fact a reality thus making them more aware.
Sadistic Voyeurism- the male characters enjoy the pain(sexual) they inflict on Jennifer Hills by spying on her before hand to make sure what place would be the perfect place to do the sexual act.
Types of shots used(what is common in the trailer, purpose of the shot): Close up shots were consistently used in the trailer to help the audience understand how the character is feeling as well as helping reinforce tension through the scene of when Jennifer Hills takes a knife whereby she wants to cut off the genitals of one of the male characters thus reinforcing her femininity and dominance. There are also numerous amounts of long shots so the audience knows everything that is happening in the trailer.
